Our inaugural film festival begins in April, we’re very excited about it. It’s a season of documentaries that meddle with the lines between fact and fiction and the name is a tribute to possibly the most famous example of such japes; Panorma’s 1957 Swiss Spaghetti April Fools. All these films play fast and loose with the ‘truth’, they are all are very clever and very funny. Particularly exciting is the news that Stephen Volk and Lesley Manning, writer and director of the legendary Ghostwatch show (which caused such a fuss it was banned for a decade and has never been shown again) will be joining us for the screening on May 11th.

Swiss Spaghetti Harvest Festival. Part 4; Little Dieter Needs To Fly.

SCREENING OF WERNER HERZOG’S LITTLE DIETER NEEDS TO FLY

The fourth and final film in our Swiss Spaghetti Harvest Festival; a season of films that blur the lines between fact and fiction.

The most nebulous of all the films in the season, Little Dieter Needs To Fly tells the story of Dieter Dengler, who in 1966 crash landed his fighter plane in Laos during the Vietnam War was taken prisoner by the Pathet Lao, before being turned over to soldiers of the Army of North Vietnam. After a period of torture and starvation chained to the bottom of a bamboo cage, Dengler escaped.

Whilst the other films in this season are out and out forgeries Little Dieter is interesting as it is a composed documentary in which Herzog scripted, and then directed Dengler in his account of his own adventure. It raises interesting questions about claims to an objective ‘truth’ as frequently inferred by documentary film-makers. But moreover it’s a beautifully shot and entertaining account of this astonishing man’s astonishing story.

Written and directed by Werner Herzog. 1997. 80 mins.
